East London Link

The East London Link will revitalize more than 6 km of road from Downtown to Fanshawe College. The project will add rapid transit and transportation improvements including transit links to the City’s eastern industrial employment areas. At the same time, the City will repair and replace aging sewers and watermains.

In 2022, the City of London constructed Phase 1 of the East London Link on King Street between Wellington Street and Lyle Street. In March 2023 construction began on Phase 2 of the East London Link.

In 2024, construction will progress to Phase 3, on Dundas Street between Egerton and Highbury Avenue and on Highbury Avenue between Dundas and Oxford Streets, extending approximately 200 metres north, west and east of the Highbury Avenue and Oxford Street intersection.

This project has received funding commitments from the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to support 10 transit and transit-supportive projects.

The work

The project will:

  • revitalize 6.3 km of road, from Downtown to Fanshawe College
  • upgrade sewers and watermains
  • install transit stations
  • widen Highbury Bridge, Highbury Avenue and Oxford Street to establish continuous transit lanes
  • install transit lanes on King and Dundas Streets
  • install smarter traffic signals to reduce intersection delays and shorten travel times, including transit signal priority, sensors and video

The benefits

Construction will result in:

  • buses being removed from traffic to improve capacity and traffic flow while increasing transit frequency and reliability
  • widened streets creating transit lanes with buses travelling in centre lanes and general traffic lanes on the right
  • on King Street, buses travelling in two curbside transit lanes - eastbound and westbound - with a single lane of eastbound general traffic travelling in the centre lane
  • the potential to extend transit service to the London International Airport in the future
  • the opportunity to provide a stronger link to the City’s eastern industrial employment areas from a transit hub at Fanshawe College.
  • dedicated turn lanes at signalized intersections that will enhance driver safety and increase capacity
  • active transportation infrastructure which will support cycling and walking
